One of the most famous members of a family of German artists active in the 17th and 18th centuries, Matthaeus Merian (the Elder) lived from 1593 to 1650. He was an engraver and publisher who produced a large number of prints, particularly of historical interest. Stradanus engraving - The Stradanus engraving is a 1615 or 1621 (depending on the source) engraving on a copper plate that was used to print certificates of indulgences of forty days' remission of sins from Juan Pérez de la Serna, then Archbishop of Mexico.
